Used in the treatment of psychosis and schizophrenia, antipsychotic drugs are divided in three different generations. First generation, the typical antipsychotics, date back in the1950’s, act by blocking the dopamine pathways and are divided in three sub-classes: Butyrophenones (Haloperidol branded as Haldol), Phenothiazines(Thorazine, Trilafon, Vesprin, Nozinan, Phenergan) and Thioxanthenes (Navane, Depixol, Clopixol). Second generation antipsychotics, known as atypical antipsychotics, are a more recent generation and main examples are: Clozapine (Clozaril), Zyprexa (treats schizophrenia and acute manic episodes) and Risperidone (known as Risperdal, used against Anxiety Disorder and Tourette syndrome). Third generation antipsychotics are very new drugs or drugs still under development include Aripiprazole (Abilify), dopamine partial agonists and Bifeprunox (under clinical development).
