The fact that there are many types of arthritis (osteoarthritis, Still’s disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, gout or pseudo gout) and different patients can present individual responses to drugs prescribed makes prescribing the correct medication very important. The most common way for treating arthritis is the use of NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). They come in three different types: salicyclates (acetylated or not), the traditional NSAIDs and COX-2 inhibitors. NSAID’s main purpose is to block the activity of the enzyme responsible for arthritis. Traditional NSAIDs include drugs such as Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), Daypro (Oxaprozin), Feldene (Piroxicam), Mobic (Meloxicam), while COX-2 inhibitor drugs are Celebrex (Celecoxib) or Vioxx (Rofecoxib).
