Treatment of diabetes requires full attention as it depends on the type of diabetes present (diabetes mellitus type 1 or type 2). The currently used diabetes drugs include: Glyset (miglitol – a glucosidase inhibitor), Metformin (Glucophage- its main purpose is to bring the glucose production to a normal healthy level, its downside is the possible appearance of diarrhea and stomach cramps), Duetact (a combination of Actos and glimepiride- not to be taken on an empty stomach), Byetta (Exantide, it stimulates insulin secretion and comes as an injection that must be administered twice a day), Avandamet (a combination of rosiglitazone and metformin that comes in different tablet strenghts), Actos (taken once a day, increases the body sensitivity to insulin) and Amaryl (glimepiride – must never be taken on empty stomach).
