Diuretic drugs are used not only for kidney or dieresis problems, but also for other diseases or conditions, such as high blood pressure (thiazides diuretics), liver cirrhosis or eating disorders. There are five main categories of diuretic drugs: high ceiling loop diuretics (they cause a substantial dieresis of up to 20% of the filtered amount of water), thiazides (they inhibit the Sodium chloride symporter), potassium sparing diuretics (spironolactone or Aldactone or Spiractin, amiloride or triamterene – they reduce the secretion of potassium into the urine), osmotic diuretic drugs (they help maintain the osmotic balance) and low ceiling diuretics (with a more linear effect, in contrast to high ceiling diuretics).
