Gout, or metabolic arthritis, develops as a result of high concentration of uric acid in the bloodstream. In severe cases of gout surgery might be necessary, so treatment with the available gout drugs is very important. It can be done either through nutritional supplements, herbs, therapy (acupuncture or applying ice) or with an allopathic treatment. To decrease the inflammation, selenium and Vitamin E are used as nutritional supplements, but also folic acid (xanthine oxidase inhibitor), alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and glycine as a daily dose improve the excretion of uric acid through kidneys. Allopathic treatment includes nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Aleve, ibuprofen, etc). Gout drugs used for lowering the level of uric acid are probenecid (Benemid), sulfinpyrazone (Anturane) and the most common of all, Allopurinol.
