High blood pressure, also known as hypertension can be treated with the use of blood pressure drugs known as antihypertensive. Their use can decrease the risk of stroke considerably, and also prevent coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease or heart failures. Usual high blood pressure drugs include: ACE inhibitors such as fosinopril, lisinopril, ramipril (ACE inhibitors increase cardiac output and venous capacity while lowering arteriolar resistance), Alpha blockers (prazosin and terazosin), Beta blockers (metaprolol, labetalol, atenolol and propranolol), Calcium channel blockers, direct rennin inhibitors (aliskiren - Tekturna) and diuretics (thiazides like Apo-Hydro, Dichlotride, and Oretic – mostly used as starting medication).
